The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
20th Century Fox / Marvel
PG
Running Time: 1:40 (Previews to Credits)

Summer movie season's latest sequel unites us with one of the Marvel universe's most "fantastic" teams in this week's flick: The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

After vanquishing Dr. Doom (Julian McMahon), the Fantastic Four have moved on with life and are trying to farm normalcy in a landscape of media frenzy. Mr. Fantastic and Sue Storm (Ioan Gruffudd and Jessica Alba) have been trying to "tie the knot" with the upcoming nuptials as the fourth try. Johnny Blaze (Chris Evans) is as brash and fiery as ever while "The Thing" (Michael Chiklis) deals compassion and strength from within his stone covered exterior.

Causing a disturbance with this latest round of nuptials is the arrival of a strange radioactive pattern that disrupts the surrounding electronics and causes immediate temperature drops. The US government seeks the help of Mr. Fantastic in discovering what this oddity might be. The team soon learns first hand what power has entered Earth's atmosphere. A glistening silver man atop an equally gleaming silver board, this "Silver Surfer" (Doug Jones) is the intergalactic herald of the planet devouring "Galactus" and has arrived to ready our planet for consumption by his lord.

Further complicating matters is the reemergence of the team's nemesis Victor Von Doom. Doom has volunteered to help stop this entity but a quick stroll down memory lane would remind one of the flaws in that thought process. But with limited time and a seemingly unstoppable foe, the Four must chance this joint venture and use their combined powers and IQ's to overcome the Intergalactic conquerors.

The latest installment of Marvel's "FF" saga is as slick as its latest addition; "The Silver Surfer." Picking up quickly from the first chapter "FF2" doesn't spend any time attempting to flesh out any of its characters. It works perfectly with this group. There are no complex issues darkening our hero's respective doors, just stereo-types in tight blue outfits saving the world one chaotic problem at a time. And unlike the latest trend in science fiction adventures, it comes in at a jack rabbit-esque 90 minutes providing for a perfect little wrapper for this fast hitting family flick.

Major kudos to the effects department of this installment for their over the top work. The "Surfer" himself is a magnificent gleaming razor while in flight, and the Four's powers are delivered pristinely and with more control this time out. It becomes obvious very quickly that the drawing points to this Marvel endeavor are the collective powers of the comic book namesake's and their associates and figuring out how to use Miss Alba's very own "special powers" to entice the age varied males in attendance while holding on to the "PG" rating. Come to think of it, that fete alone requires some sort of super power.

I do recommend this latest "Fantastic Four" adventure as the entertaining little film it was created to be. Good summer fun from beginning to end, a nice tidy little package and a chance to stroll down memory lane all equal one fantastic movie experience. Now about that "Alba" special power … Enjoy and take care!
