It appears that the Diocese of Scranton will announce Tues and Wed about a study that took place last year concerning closing of schools.

Being that they are a private institution, they are not required to but will be having a Press Conference to make these announcements.

Proposed changes would include:

Consolidating the four Luzerne County high schools — Bishop Hoban in Wilkes-Barre, Seton Catholic in Pittston, Bishop O’Reilly in Kingston and Bishop Hafey in Hazleton — with students attending a yet-to-be named school in the Bishop Hoban building.

Creating a regional system of elementary schools dotting the county. Students from closed schools would meld into nearby schools. Several lower schools would be slowly phased out, but St. John Paul II in Nanticoke would be shut next school year. All Hazleton elementary students would move into one school, which could be built from proceeds from selling Bishop Hafey. Other elementary schools slated for consolidation include Holy Rosary, Duryea; Sacred Heart of Jesus, Dupont; Wyoming Area Catholic, Exeter; St. Mary Assumption, Pittston; Sacred Heart, St. Aloysius and St. Boniface, all of Wilkes-Barre; Regis Elementary, Forty Fort; Bishop O’Reilly, Kingston; and Sacred Heart, Luzerne.

Making all churches jointly responsible for funding Catholic education. Parishes and pastors would no longer lead and fund individual schools. Instead, all parishes would shoulder the funding burden and a board of directors would govern the system.

Wednesday night there will be an announcement about the future of Catholic schools in Lackawanna and Wayne counties. That meeting will be held at Saint Mary's Center in Scranton. The announcement will be made at 8:30 p.m.

As For Lackawanna and Wayne County Schools:

It appears that the recommendation is to close the following schools:

Bishop Hannan
Bishop O'Hara

Saint Mary School in Old Forge
Holy Rosary in Scranton
St. Mary Visitation in Dickson City
Saint Anthony in Dunmore

They would then build a new single high school to teach the students.
