PG-13
Running Time: 2hr 50m (Previews to Credits)
The swashbuckling adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow continue on in the third installment of Disney's international juggernaut; Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.
Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann (Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightley) are forced to ally with their old nemesis Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) in order to find and rescue Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) from Davey Jones' Locker.
This is no small undertaking and involves dealing with even more treacherous men than Barbossa. The alternative, however, is facing the wrath of Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander) and his never ending quest to purge the Earth of piracy. And now that he controls the power of Davey Jones (Bill Nighy) and his crew of damned seamen, he seems almost unstoppable. So with this in mind, they meet with the pirate lord of Singapore Sao Feng (Chow Yun Fat) and attempt to enlist his help in locating and rescuing Jack.
Despite a double-cross and Beckett's troops the trio find themselves in Davey Jones's Locker and in the presence of an even more unstable than usual Captain Jack Sparrow. After a few moments of convincing the group is able to bring the good Captain around and assure him they are in fact real and not further figments of his taxed mind. With Captain Jack in tow, the company heads for the gathering of the pirate lords so they may plan their last stand in the face of the destructive power of Beckett and Davey Jones. Does Captain Jack have one more trick up his tattered sleeve, or is this truly the end for the lovable rogues?
The "Pirate" films begin and end with one man; Johnny Depp. Perhaps the greatest actor of our generation, Depp is once again in top form as the most delightful rogue to ever grace the silver screen: the scoundrel Captain Jack Sparrow. A stellar cast once again surrounds Depp, but only Geoffrey Rush has the chops to stand toe to toe with Depp's over the top eccentric Sparrow.
Of course, the film has its share of astounding computer generated effects. The bar being set early on in the series with the panoramic oceanic views and the seemingly endless variety of escapes concocted and executed on the fly by the stumbling Captain Jack.
The only minor twist in my knickers is brought about by the maze of subplots and subsequent twists that really detract from the good ole fashioned fun of what the "Pirate's" franchise. This isn't a Scorsese crime drama here, its high seas adventure and I don't feel that needing a pencil and notepad to follow the loyalty curve of those involved enriches it. Plus, it would help pare down the LOTR running time.
That aside, however, I recommend "Pirate's 3"as a film that will appeal to hearts both young and old and fill them with a delightful sense of adventure as you are transported with that devilish imp Captain Jack Sparrow into an adventure that delivers as promised and truly defines "blockbuster." Enjoy and take care! |
